Heavy Reading

This week as I checked the New York Times best seller list, I noticed a few teen books with involved subject matters: Tweak by Nic Sheff, Lock and Key by Sarah Dessen, Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher.

I recently read Impulse by Ellen Hopkins and was a little shocked at first by the book. It addresses suicide, drugs, pregnancy and other teen issues. The more I read I became engrossed with the three main characters and their gradual revelations of underlying problems. By the end of the book, I felt like I knew the characters personally and was both saddened and hopeful for their futures. Don’t be discouraged by the size of the book. It is written in verse and an easy read. You also might try Crank, Burned and Glass also written by Ellen Hopkins.

I am sure a lot of us can relate to one or more of the issues addressed in any of these books either personally or through a friend. Why not give one a try.
