Tax Assistance @ SJCPLTax Assistance
FREE Income Tax Assistance for Low- and Medium-Income Individuals and Senior Citizens

Free income tax assistance will be offered at designated locations of the St. Joseph County Public Library during February, March, and April 2011.

Assistance in tax return preparation is:
  • limited to federal and state of Indiana forms
  • available on a first-come, first-served basis
The number of people served may be limited if there are more people waiting than can be accommodated during a session.

Two local groups will be providing assistance:

AARP - Tax counselors provided by AARP and certified by the IRS.
  • Assistance in e-filing provided for low-to-moderate-income taxpayers, with special attention given to those 60 and older.
  • One return per client per day.
  • Assistance not available when South Bend Community School Corporation schools are closed due to inclement weather.
  • Individuals must be pre-registered in person at each SJCPL location no more than one week before each session. There will be two sessions at each location: 10:00 a.m. & noon at Francis Branch and Centre Township Branch and noon & 2:00 p.m. at German Township Branch. No walk-ins will be accepted.

ND/SMC - Mendoza College of Business students from the University of Notre Dame and students from St. Mary’s College serving the public through the Tax Assistance Program.

  • Assistance is available to low- and medium-income residents any age with gross income levels of $40,000 and under per return.
  • CPAs will be available at certain locations to assist taxpayers with out-of-the-ordinary situations (e.g., itemizing deductions, collecting rents, reporting capital gains/losses); taxpayers with these situations should plan to have their returns prepared at locations that are CPA staffed.
  • The number of people served may be limited if there are more people waiting than can be accommodated during a session.

** To make preparing your 2010 returns easier, please bring your 2009 tax returns (federal and state) as well as the following 2010 information: W2 forms, pension statements, Social Security statements, property tax statements, interest and dividend income statements, and rent information. You will also need to bring a valid photo ID, your own Social Security card, and the Social Security cards for each dependent you want to claim.
